Meet the Archaeologist

Dr. Sophia Ramirez

Field of Focus: Ancient Trade Networks & Maritime Archaeology

Q: Can you tell us a bit about yourself and how you got into archaeology?

Absolutely! I grew up near the coast of Florida and was always fascinated by shipwreck stories. When I was a kid, my family visited a maritime museum, and I was hooked. I studied anthropology in college and later earned a PhD specializing in ancient trade routes in the Mediterranean. My passion is uncovering the connections between cultures through the objects they traded.

Q: What’s one of the most exciting discoveries you’ve been part of?

During a survey off the coast of Cyprus, our team discovered a Roman-era shipwreck filled with amphorae. It gave us incredible insight into the types of goods being transported at the time — especially olive oil and wine. It felt like a real-life time capsule waiting to be opened!

Q: What advice would you give to aspiring archaeologists?

Stay curious and be prepared for lots of patience. Archaeology isn’t just about digging — it’s about interpreting evidence and preserving stories. Plus, don’t underestimate the importance of networking with museums and local heritage organizations.

Fun Fact: I play the cello in a local community orchestra — it’s my favorite way to unwind after a long field season.
